On June 30, 2009 the staff members’ from the offices of Congressman William Delahunt and Senator Edward Kennedy met with marine industry groups, including C-PORT, to discuss the delays and obstacles professional mariners were experiencing when applying for new license credentials, as well as renewals.
During this meeting Capt. Joseph Frohnhoefer III suggested that the Coast Guard be able to extend mariner’s licenses for a year. In response to this request U.S. Rep. Bill Delahunt announced that the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved legislation that allows the Coast Guard to extend the duration of expiring mariner licenses for up to one year. Delahunt says, “this measure will reduce large backlog of mariner license applications.”
This bill next heads to the floor for consideration by the full House. Click here for more information.
